Open Door North East would not be able to function in the way that it does without the incredible input of so many volunteers. However, many of our volunteers tell us that they gain as much as they give through their experience with us.

Whilst we are a Christian Charity we welcome volunteers from all faiths (& non faith) and backgrounds.

We have a number of opportunities currently available for volunteering listed below. If you would like more information about any of these roles please contact us.

Housing Befrienders – We are looking to recruit befrienders to visit our clients in their own homes and provide someone to talk to whilst helping them to look after the place where they are living (For example many young men from other nations have no prior experience of cleaning). You don’t need any experience or qualifications to become a volunteer befriender – just a willingness to provide consistent and supportive companionship for a couple of hours each week.

Housing Inspection and Maintenance - We are looking for committed individuals who can spend 2 to 3 hours a week visiting some of our houses to check on the general condition and reporting any maintenance issues. This would particularly suite individuals who like DIY and are happy to do some painting once in a while.

ESOL Teachers - We are looking for qualified and experienced teachers (CELTA or equivalent) to help us develop our work by committing to a minimum of two hours per week. Individuals would need to share our belief in inclusion and the importance of developing the individual and be willing to take responsibility for preparing and teaching lessons.

Teaching Assistants/Helpers - The Teaching Assistant role is to support our qualified English teachers in the delivery of classes. We aim to have one teaching assistant to three/four learners. Under the direction and guidance of our teachers, you would work alongside our learners, helping them to understand and cope with the language teaching as well as encouraging them to join in with the more social aspects of our lessons. Previous experience is not necessary as the teachers leading the classes will take responsibility for teaching materials and organisation.

Our Weekly Drop-ins – We need additional volunteers on a Monday and Tuesday (Women only on Tuesday) to welcome and befriend our clients as well distribute food to those with no support.

Refugee Employment Support & Advice Projects - We need to increase our team of volunteers including individuals who speak other languages to help new refugees to access employment training and benefits. A good understanding of basic IT and how to use the internet is important for this role.

Social Media, Communications, Fundraising & Administration We are always looking to work with committed and innovative individuals from all walks of like.

You may have a passion for admin, are great at fundraising or have an aptitude for social media. If this is you we would like to hear from you. We cannot promise to find the volunteering opportunity for you but we would love to hear from you, share a coffee with you and see how we might work together.
